Special Commendation, School Leader Award

Mrs Karen Spiller
Principal
St Aidan's Anglican Girls' School, Corinda, QLD

Karen Spiller has demonstrated genuine interest in and support for music at St Aidan's and in the broader community through her observations of classes and rehearsals, her strong support for music staff and the implementation of new and innovative curriculum approaches, such as the Music Everyday Program (short, daily music classes rather than longer weekly music classes). She has demonstrated an authentic belief in inclusivity and equity, not only in her support of the St Aidan’s music program, but also through support of the program at Milpera State High School.

Karen has participated in the St Aidan's Community Choir and enthusiastically attends all school concerts. Karen encourages music staff to contribute to the broader community of music educators through their participation in professional development opportunities, such as music staff members presenting sessions at national and international conferences. She has worked closely with music staff to develop a vision for the School's music program and has provided substantial music facility upgrades, in full consultation with staff.

Special Commendation, Teacher Award

Ms Simone Bailey-Hough
Head of The Arts
Nagle Catholic College, Geraldton, WA

Simone Bailey-Hough has established a thriving music department from nothing through her enthusiasm and a genuine love for her students and her role in the school. Currently Simone co-ordinates a large instrumental program, providing support for instrumental staff who have little or no formal training. Following requests from school principals at the other local schools, Simone also regularly mentors music staff in Geraldton.

At Nagle College, there are many co-curricular ensembles, including jazz band, choir, and many rock bands, along with the concert band which Simone conducts. Among highlights of the music program are a student composition being recorded by WA Symphony Orchestra, rock bands earning paid gigs as well as the day to day excitement of students accomplishing things that they never thought possible.

A large part of the success of the music program comes from innovative classroom programs which are balanced by instrumental tuition. Simone incorporates three different levels within her classroom, for which she has written workbooks containing activities for listening to music, composition, aural training, performance and music technology. Students from a wide range of abilities are able to achieve success and to develop a lifelong love of music which then flows into the community. During her time in Geraldton, Simone has given the town a significant boost ensuring that music education is available for all.

Special Commendation, Teacher Award

Mr Craig McGown
Music/Concert Band/Boys' Education Coordinator
Erskine Park High School, Erskine Park, NSW

Craig McGown has initiated and driven remarkable breadth of opportunity for students at Erskine Park High School and for primary and secondary students across the whole Western Sydney region. His leadership, organisational skills and passion towards education and music education in particular have been apparent in his various roles as a classroom music teacher, a school concert band conductor / leader, a committee member on the PULSE Showcase in Excellence of Western Sydney Arts and as a Regional Arts Council member representing high school music teachers in the Western Sydney Region.

His tactful quest for continuous improvement and unceasing commitment to musical excellence are celebrated by students, colleagues and parents. He has overseen the development of a Gifted and Talented component in the band program, and is making use of technology to facilitate creative work and to extend learning outcomes in his classes. Craig promotes the achievements of Aboriginal students in Western Sydney and has supported these students in various ways, including providing opportunities for performances at regional events. Craig believes that through strong extra-curricular musical activities he can foster a love of music in students that is not always achievable at a classroom level.

As a teacher, leader, and practicing musician he has met the challenges of large comprehensive high schools with energy, reliability and an open mind.
