Melissa Alexander's dedication and commitment to professional development in her own time has enabled her to become a highly respected and inspirational music teacher. During her years at Latham Primary School, Melissa had such a positive impact on students and staff that music is now a highly valued part of the whole curriculum. Melissa was able to work collaboratively with other teachers in a way that raised their skills, understanding, and confidence to include music in their own classroom programs. Due to the Education Department's teacher mobility policy, Melissa was transferred to a new school in 2009, with her legacy to Latham PS being a sustainable program.
In her new school, Weetangera Primary School, Melissa has quickly won the trust and respect of the whole school community. In addition to regular music lessons, Melissa has successfully worked with students with special needs. With the cooperation of parents, the program has expanded to include instrumental and choral participation, whole school activity and links with the wider community. It is evident that Melissa ensures that music plays an important role in the whole school ethos through her inspirational and vibrant leadership in the Arts.
